Leeds Amateur Championship Final
By beating Paul Birkett (Barnsley) in the Amateur Final at Wetherby Golf Club, Sam Stokes (Scarcroft) won both the Amateur Match play title and becomes the LDU Golfer of the Year.
The weather was not kind with light rainfall all day and Paul, a 1 handicap Senior golfer, struggled to find the form which brought him through to the final as the oldest finalist to qualify. Sam played steady golf and took a commanding lead after the first round with a 6 hole lead going in for lunch.
After lunch holes were exchanged but Paul could not eat into the 6 hole lead and when Sam increased his lead to 9 up on the 27th hole. Paul dragged his tee shot into the trees and failed to make the green with his second shot on the 28th and Sam was within 6 feet in 2 shots Paul shook hands and congratulated Sam on his success.
